Clairefontaine Triomphe A5 Notebook Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And her latest book, Root Rot, is now available for pre-order!)

Clairefontaine were my first introduction to good paper. I found them when I was a student in my freshman undergraduate year, and I used them all through school--though back in those ancient times, I had to order them from Europe. It was worth it. Now? I can get as much Clairefontaine as I want from JetPens. I am limited only by the volume of my house.

The Triomphe A5 Notebook is one of their fabulous middle-of-the-road books, as far as cost and quality go. You can get nicer ones for slightly higher cost, and less fancy ones for very low cost--but this one is the Goldilocks. It is A5 size, with lined, white, acid-free paper. There are 48 sheets at 90gsm, and the heavier weight minimizes ghosting, so you can easily use both sides of those sheets.

At 8mm, I do find the line spacing a bit wide for my comfort, but it's the perfect layout for testing broad, juicy fountain pen nibs, as this paper can happily handle it all. Every pen I tried felt great on this paper, and the medium nib I ultimately chose to write with felt like it was gliding across the page. Only the Sharpie, the laser of pens, dotted through at all.

The cover is cardstock, with minimal branding. The single signature is stitched with thread that runs the whole length of the spine, so the notebook lies flat without any worry about pages coming loose. It feels durable. My Clairefontaine notebooks from college, which were the less expensive staple-stitched ones, were tough enough to last an entire semester of daily use, and this one is considerably stronger than that. This nicer one is still only $12 at JetPens, which is a great price for the quality.

These notebooks are perfect for students, for commonplace books, work notebooks--any use where you need a moderate amount of fabulous paper. It almost makes me sad I don't have classes anymore. Almost.

Pretty sure it has something to do with the on/off nature of this past winter, but I'm definitely ready for some warmer weather (or maybe just some consistency?). At any rate, a new notebook is always a good method to add some excitement to the dull weather. This week, I've been enjoying a new notebook from Clairefontaine that rocks an exquisite cover that has a lot of summer vibes.

The Neo Deco line of notebooks from Clairefontaine all feature a unique and bold art deco cover design that can fit any occasion. I couldn't pass up the Turquoise option because of the bright colors and contrast.

The specs of the notebook are very familiar if you've ever used Clairefontaine before. It features 48 pages of 90 gsm paper that provides an excellent writing experience with virtually all writing instruments. All of Clairefontaine’s paper is lined, so that normally turns a portion of people away who prefer other options. It's really a shame and something that I wish the company would change. I happen to enjoy lined paper on some occasions, and Clairefontaine is probably my favorite lined notebook maker. But, I'd buy a lot more of their products if they offered other options like blank, grid, and even dot.

Still, if you dislike lined paper, you still need to at least try Clairefontaine's excellent paper. It really is fantastic, and their notebooks are fairly accessible and affordable.

The Neo Deco line uses a soft cardboard material for the covers and a stitched binding that holds up well. At just 48 pages, the notebook easily stays open when writing, but the front cover will always stand up when the notebook is closed. That's easy to fix with an elastic band, though.

The 48 pages inside are all the same lined pages — no tables of contents or information pages in these notebooks. Branding is also small with this notebook. There are Clairefontaine logos on the front and back, and some information about the company and materials used on the inside of the back cover. Still, the branding is minimal.

Besides the silky paper, the real star of this show is the cover design. In the Turquoise option I picked, the main cover is a bright turquoise blue with gold leaf accents in the shape of tropical leaves. There's also light-blue tropical leaves on top of the blue cover that provide another layer to the design that gives it more dimension. The bright blue and reflective gold are a knockout combination that I love having on my desk.

Sticking with the art deco theme, there are several other cover options if the bright tropical cover isn't your thing. These A5 notebooks come in at $11, which is a great value for the fun covers and excellent paper. I always have at least one Clairefontaine notebook in my active rotation, and the paper quality and writing experience is the main reason. With this new notebook, it stays on top of the stack longer because the bright cover just makes me smile.

Clairefontaine Neo Deco A5 Notebook Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

I think I changed my mind five times about what notebook I would use for my class lecture notes this semester. It's an important decision! If you're reading this, I know you get it. I finally landed on these Clairefontaine Neo Deco A5 notebooks. Whether I made a definitive decision, or if school started before I could change my mind again, will remain a mystery. But I've been writing in these daily for a week now, and they're working quite well for the purpose.

Clairefontaine Neo Deco A5 Notebook

These are A5 sized books with a matte-coated cardstock cover that comes in a variety of gorgeous Art Deco patterns. There are pastels and jewel tones, all with a touch of gold foil shimmer to them. The geometric patterns are particularly stunning. The cover is sewn all along the spine, which gives the pages a secure join. The cardstock is firm enough and the binding thorough enough that the notebook feels a lot more substantial than many softcover notebooks do.

Clairefontaine Neo Deco A5 Notebook Test

Between the covers are 48 sheets, or 96 pages of 90gsm ivory lined paper. It is very smooth, with almost no tooth to it, but the thickness of the paper creates a slightly cushioned writing experience. Clairefontaine paper has always been a favorite for fountain pen users because of its liquid-ink-friendly properties, and this thicker sheet is even better than the more basic cahiers. Even the broadest, inkiest writing is invisible through the page. Sharpie shows through, but doesn't actually fully bleed through. The paper shows fun ink properties very well, with both shading and sheening standing out.

Clairefontaine Neo Deco A5 Notebook Writing

I do have one criticism of the paper, and that is dry time. Any paper this impervious to bleeding will have a long dry time, but for this paper, you either need to walk away from your page for a while before turning it, or invest in some blotting paper. Even when taking slow notes, I ended up with some ink splotch transfers across pages.

The lines on these pages are also quite widely spaced at 8mm. It's great if you have large handwriting, and sometimes my notes are more legible if I write bigger, but I prefer narrower lines. Better yet, I'd prefer grid patterns. Unfortunately, I can only find these available in wide-lined versions.

Clairefontaine has some of the best paper for the best value in their simple cahiers, and while these cost a bit more than those, they're still a great deal at $8.50. They're nice enough and priced reasonably enough to snag a few of your favorite patterns. I've already stocked up to use them again next semester. If I don't change my mind again.
