Raymay Detecool Pen Case Review

I haven't had much use for pen cases over the past year and a half, but that doesn't change my "need" for acquiring more interesting pen cases. The latest quirky pen case to make its way to my desk is the Raymay Detecool. The premise is pretty simple: this is a case that operates as an art station for your pens and pencils, but it easily packs up for easy transport.

Raymay Detecool Pen Case

Admittedly, I've never had much use for cases that hold a large number of pens/pencils, but doesn't change the fact that they're hella cool. When I'm out and about, I typically have one to three pens on me depending on the nature of my outing — never close to 30 like the Detecool can hold. It seems like the perfect use case for this case is for actual artists who want to carry things like colored pencils or a collection of colored pens for drawing, coloring, and other artistic endeavors that I've never pursued. I imagine plopping this case on a desk or work surface, opening it up, and tilting out the box to display all my colored pens/pencils for easy identification and grabbing. I almost want to buy a set of colored pencils or pigment pens just to load out this case and revel in the organizational beauty.

Regardless of what you load this case with, it will likely be touching whatever is next to it. There are two compartments that hold pen-shaped objects, so this isn't a good solution for more valuable pens that you don't want to be scratched or making constant contact with other things. Again, it seems like the perfect use for this case is with low-cost pencils and drawing pens where you don't care so much about little scuffs and scratches since the instruments are disposable.

And if it wasn't obvious, this lower area with the two compartments tilts out to a 45-degree angle to conveniently show the pens/pencils and make it easier to grab what you need. It's definitely still usable when the compartments are "retracted" into the case, but it's more difficult to see everything in the cluster of stuff.

Above the tilting compartment, there's a small pouch at the top of the case. This is the perfect size for a small eraser or sharpener, but be warned that it is indeed small. I couldn't fit a case of mechanical pencil lead because it was too tall. I could barely fit a rectangular eraser, but a small sharpener fit perfectly. Short ink cartridges, spare mechanical pencil erasers, and other really small bits and bobs will do great in this little pouch.

So, what all can you fit in this thing? In my really scientific testing of jamming as many pens and pencils as I could find into the case, I came up to 28 pens/pencils and two pencil lead containers. With this many items, it was still comfortable enough to grab what I needed from the case without any difficulty. If you add too many things, they become tight and difficult to pull out, which means the whole case just comes along when you grab a pencil, etc. I don't know about you, but 28 writing instruments is crazy, and I don't think I'll ever need to take that many things out with me. Again, it seems like this would be a perfect case for taking a collections of colored pens/pencils out to do some drawing or working in a coloring book on the go. Easy to use when opened up and tilted, but packs up quickly and securely.

Speaking of packing up, this thing is convenient. Simply tilt the compartment back in place, flip the flap over to the front where the magnets pop into place, and then zip up the panel with the smooth double zip pull. Opening it up is just as easy, and there's a matching magnet on the back of the case to keep the flap/door out of the way while you're using your pens and pencils. I could imagine this case being incredibly fussy and frustrating to use, but Raymay have done a great job in designing this perfectly for convenience. It's so easy to use and hasn't caused me any trouble. Granted, this is a larger case and you'll definitely need two hands to open/close the case.

When the case is closed, everything inside stays where it's supposed to be. I tested this out (again, very scientifically) by flipping the case upside down, batting it around on my desk, flopping it on its sides, spinning it, shaking it, and tossing it around, and all the pens and pencils stayed in place. The sharpener I had stowed in the pouch sometimes came out of the pouch, but it surprisingly stayed in place most of the time.

As far as what you can store in this case, there aren't many limitations. From my testing, I was able to store almost anything except for new unsharpened pencils. They're just a tad too long for the case to close properly. But, a new pencil that's only been sharpened once fits just fine. So you can't cart around brand new unsharpened pencils, but I believe most colored pencil sets are pre-sharpened anyway, which is perfect.

Aside from the great usability of this case, the quality of materials is great for the price. It won't protect the insides if something heavy crushes the case, but it won't have any problems protecting its contents when thrown in a tote or bag with other objects. The zips are good quality, and the zip pull is easy to use. There's even a nifty loop on top of the case that you can use to hang out secure the case to something else. If the inside of your bag has a clip or something, you could clip the case in place to ensure it stays upright. Heck, you could even clip this to your belt loop if so inclined. Overall, this is an extremely functional case that just works as intended. It's not for everyone, but it really hits the mark for the intended audience. Well done, Raymay.

At $21.00, the Raymay Detecool is a great value. There's a lot of design and material that make this case so successful, and the price is more than fair. And if the blue-green version I have isn't your thing, there are plenty of other options as well.

Sun-Star Delde Smand Pen Case Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

If you watch the Pen Addict Twitch stream, you've likely seen people shouting SMAND! at random intervals. The clever Sun-Star Delde Stand Pen Case has quickly become a fan favorite--almost an obsession. Can a pen case be a cult classic? Looking at it, I could not figure out why everyone was obsessed with it, so Brad sent me one to try. And it's fine. I mean, it's a good case, and a good design, but my favorite thing about it is the name. Smand!

Sun-Star Delde Smand

It's made out of polyester canvas with a smooth lining. It has a plastic double-zip zipper, a unique wedge shape, and a magnetic front flap with a rubberized interior that folds down to act as a device stand. The dimensions of the stand and case are based around common smartphone sizes, with the implication being that your smartphone is now one of your school supplies. And that's certainly true, these days. The case was designed by middle and high schoolers, and their digital-analog hybrid life is definitely reflected in it. So it's not entirely surprising if it doesn't quite meet the needs of my ancient mummy self.

Sun-Star Delde Smand Stand

What I like about it: Great colors available. I like the structured construction that helps protect the contents. The stand feature works well for devices as long as the case is filled and weighted down (otherwise it tips). The wedge shape fits nicely in bags. I like the name SMAND.

What I don't care for: It doesn't hold very much--just a handful of pens, and even less if you also put a phone in there. If your phone also has a case on it, then maybe only very few pens. It's a bit tippy as a stand unless you keep the case part full. If they had made it just a few millimeters taller, it could fit some scissors or a pocket notebook, but as it is, it's too small.

Sun-Star Delde Smand Open

Brad has cleverly been using his as a pen rest, as the rubberized stand platform is perfect for preventing pens from rolling away on the desk. I think that's a great way to use this case, and I would definitely do that if I didn't have small children and cats who would be too tempted by such treasures left out in the open. Since I have a middle-schooler, and we have just acquired his school supplies, I did a test run to see if this case would work for his needs, and it did not fit even a third of what he's expected to carry with him in his backpack. So I do think it makes a better desk stand than a transport case. It's called a Smand, after all, and not a Smace.

Sun-Star Delde Smand Full

I think this would be a great tool for artists who need to prop up a reference picture, or knitters who want to keep their digital pattern visible and their notions handy. My Smand is likely destined for my knitting bag, and it won't be the only pen case in there. At $17 on JetPens, it's a great deal on a decent case. And decent as it is, I still don't get why everyone is so shouty about it (except that it's just fun to say....SMAND!).

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Review

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Twitter. And check out her latest book, Out of Water, now available where books are sold!)

It's weird to say something like this, but I love everything about the Shibui A5 Life Organizer except the design. The things I dislike about it might not bother you, in which case (pun intended) you might really enjoy this product.

Shibui A5 Life Organizer

For one, it is extremely well constructed. The stitching is strong and even. There are sturdy, metal YKK zippers--one for the main compartment that has a metal pull, and two interior ones with leather pulls. The whole case is made from a suede-textured genuine leather (this one is called Desert Tan). The finish of the leather takes on the character of its environment, absorbing hand oils, etc. The suede finish means it will show stains and damp fingerprints very clearly, which I like but it might drive you nuts. There's a brass snap closure inside, and a pull-to-adjust pen loop that can accommodate a wide range of pen widths. The outside is very minimal looking, and the inside has the Shibui logo embossed on the left side.

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Card Slot
Shibui A5 Life Organizer Zipper

Inside, on the left, there is a small, fabric-lined zipper compartment, four fabric-lined card slots, one long vertical leather-lined zipper pouch, and a folder pocket behind that. At the center is the adjustable pen loop. On the right side there is a card slot, a snap-closure loop, and a large folder pocket for a notebook cover.

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Pen Loop
Shibui A5 Life Organizer Snap

These inclusions are fairly standard for an organizer cover. I've tried out at least four other A5 cases that have similar features in the past few years. The issue I have with this case is the configuration of these features.

For one, the pen loop is placed so that any pen you put there will be aligned with the metal zipper teeth and slider. That's likely to damage the finish of any pen you place there. That may not be an issue at all if you're just carrying a disposable pen or a metal pen that's made to take a beating, but if you're inclined to carry fine pens, this is an easy deal breaker.

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Pen Loop
Shibui A5 Life Organizer Back Loop

The other design issue I have with this cover is the snap loop closure on the inside back cover. I have a serious Princess and the Pea situation going on with that snap. Placing it behind where the notebook is supposed to sit creates a huge lump in the middle of the page. And if I were to actually use that loop to hold cords as it's intended, it would be even more lumpy. Of course, not everyone uses this space for notebooks. Some use that pocket for devices. And if you're using it for a planner where you're just jotting down quick entries, maybe that lump isn't so intrusive. But for longer writing, it's not very nice.

Shibui A5 Life Organizer Notebook

Overall, this is not a bad product, and it's competitively priced at around $70, which is much less than many genuine leather A5 cases cost. And for the average person, who is not as fussy about their pens as we are in this community, and who isn't as likely, perhaps, to sit and write for an hour or two in their notebook, this could be a wonderful addition to their stationery setup. It really doesn't work for me, though, and I wouldn't recommend it to a general audience in the pen community. There are people who would love it, though, and they'd have good reasons, too.
