Kokuyo Sooofa Soft Ring Notebook Review

Sooofa Ring Great!

Yes, Sooofa, with three Os. It's fitting, as this is definitely an "oooh" notebook. Kokuyo makes some of the best notebooks, and the Sooofa Soft Ring Notebook might be my favorite of theirs to date.

It's slightly wider than A5, and also comes in a slightly wide B6, in a handful of calm colors. The cover is matte plastic with minimal branding, a wee notch cutout for your pen clip, and an elastic band closure. Inside the back cover is a clear plastic folder-style pocket. The cover is durable and cleanable, so it's up to any kind of adventure, from camping to math class.

The paper is Kokuyo's Campus paper, which is some of the best out there for whatever writing tool you like, from pencils to fountain pens, and it handles it all with ease, so you can use both sides of each of these 80 sheets. The paper has a faint 4mm grid, so it works for those who like grid or lined, but it's also faint enough that it can be ignored altogether as if the page was blank. The grid is a bit small for me to write on every line, but every-other works well. The pages are micro-perforated and can be cleanly removed if the user wants, but the perforation is durable enough that the pages you want to keep don't come loose.

The key feature of this notebook is the soft ring binding. The rings are squishy, smooth plastic that are comfortable against your hand. They spring back into shape instead of getting permanently smooshed like wire binding. There are no stabby bits that snag on things, and they're low-profile, so you don't have a ring-bulk at one end of your notebook.

Basically, this notebook fixes all the things that make me say I hate spiral binding. It's the perfect school notebook, with enough pages to last a semester of notes and assignments. At $13.75 for A5, and $11.25 for B6, it is slightly more expensive than Kokuyo's other notebooks, but still extremely reasonable for the quality. It's more that Kokuyo's other products are shockingly inexpensive, and this one is closer to what I would expect, price-wise--and if it were any other brand, it would probably cost quite a bit more.

I'm already planning to grab a stack of these for next semester's classes, and the only thing I don't like about that plan is the waiting to use them.

Kokuyo Campus Business A5 Notebook Review

The Kokuyo Campus Business 105BT-DB A5 notebook is easy to miss based on the name alone, but underneath the non-descriptive number/letter name is a fantastic little notebook. There are so many different A5 notebooks to choose from; it's basically one of the most popular notebook sizes available, and for good reason. It's large enough to write comfortably, but small enough to easily transport and carry around. Why choose this notebook over another? Well, like most things, it comes down to personal preference.

Kokuyo Campus A5 Notebook

To me, one of the big distinguishing factors of this notebook is the cover and binding. it's a flimsy, flexible cover and a blued binding that gives the notebook more of a permanent journal feel over a spiral-bound notebook for school notes. It's still fairly economical, though. At just over $3, it's a great value for the level of quality. The glue binding feels strong, but also pliable enough to allow the notebook to easily stay flat when open.

The cover is a dark blue with white text, but there's also a subtle gray honeycomb pattern all over the cover. I really like this extra visual texture on an otherwise "all business" notebook.

Kokuyo Campus A5 Notebook Paper

Inside the covers, there's 50 sheets of Kokuyo's lovely 70gsm paper. The paper is lined (30 lines per page), but there are also dots along the lines to provide some guidance for separating things horizontally. The paper has a silky smooth coating that makes most pens glide across the surface, but some pens/inks have trouble getting enough "grip" to make the ink flow freely. In my testing, I've only had issues with a 1.5mm stub nib and the Schmidt P8126 rollerball refill. The rollerball seems to lack the amount of friction required to rotate the microscopic ball that distributes the ink on the page. Once it's moving, it's not bad, but it does take a little scribbling to make it start. Aside from that, I really love using this paper with all manner of writing instruments (provided they agree with the paper coating).

Show-through on the back of the sheet is fairly prominent with fountain pen inks, but not so bad with everything else. This is typical and expected for the paper weight (70gsm) but something you should consider if you mostly use large fountain pen nibs or anything else that lays down a lot of ink compared to a traditional fine fountain pen or gel ink refill.

Kokuyo Campus A5 Notebook Back Page

This notebook is utilitarian on both the outside and inside. There's some normal branding and retail markings on the exterior covers, but the inside covers are bare (aside from a few diagrams with suggestions for using the dots system). No name labels or anything; the notebook just gets right to business with the first page. The pages aren't numbered, but there is a convenient spot in the top outer corner of each page for the date.

Kokuyo Campus Notebook Review

The Kokuyo Campus Business A5 notebook is a no-frills workhorse of a notebook. I've really enjoyed using it over the past several weeks. The size is perfect and the flexible covers make it comfortable to carry and handle. While it's not a great choice for writing in environments where you don't have a hard surface to work on, it's an excellent choice for notes and journaling as long as you have a desk or table to work from. The silky smooth paper is enjoyable and the unique Kokuyo dots/lines paper layout is useful. At $3.30 a notebook, they're a great option for stocking up on this handy size notebook.

Kokuyo Campus Todai Series Pre-Dotted Twin Ring Notebook Review

Kokuyo Campus Todai Series Pre-Dotted Twin Ring Notebook Writing Sample

I mentioned a few weeks back that I am way behind in paper/notebook/journal reviews, so I am glad to finally start to get caught up on some of these. The Kokuyo Campus Todai Pre-Dotted notebook is a unique notebook in the fact that it combines both lines and dots for a really unique writing background. I think I have had this one laying around for 6 months or so - it's about time I tested it out!

This notebook was created as the result of a joint research project on students in Japan, and that is definitely who this notebook is targeted to. At just 40 sheets, it is not going to take the full brunt of daily note taking, but it is the perfect compliment to math and science classes with any type of lab work. The lines allow for clean written notes, and the dots are perfect for diagrams and sketches.

Since I am not a student, and didn't really excel at math or science, I bought it for another reason - the cool cover! While I am not a full fledged map nerd, I have always enjoyed the technical aspects of maps, especially subway/train type maps. Something about how chaotic they can be, but still remain very clean and focused fascinates me (if you browse through my Tumblr you will see many examples). The map on the cover of this Kokuyo Campus is of the Tokyo Subway system, and is the same on the yellow version of the notebook.

All of the inks I threw at this paper did exceptionally well, including the liquid ink pens. There was no bleed, feathering, or show through of any type. You can check it out on the back page for yourself. A pretty impressive performance if you ask me.
